UIN SUSKA RIAU ROLES IN PREPARING ITS RESOURCES TO ANTICIPATE GLOBAL CHALLENGES BASED ON ISLAMIC CONCEPTS TOWARDS WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY
UIN SUSKA RIAU ROLES IN PREPARING ITS RESOURCES TO
ANTICIPATE GLOBAL CHALLENGES BASED ON ISLAMIC CONCEPTS TOWARDS
WORLD CLASS UNIVERSITY
DICKI HARTANTO, MM
Lecturer At Economics Education, Education
and Teacher’s Training Faculty
UIN SUSKA RIAU in
Pekanbaru, 2011, a paper presented in English Seminar – UIN Suska 12 December
2011 with the theme ‘The Persepective of UIN Suska Riau To Islam In Facing The
Global Challenges Towards World Class University in 2020 by UIN Language Center
BACKGROUND
Islamic State University Of Sultan Syarif Kasim (UIN
Suska) Riau was a result of development and improvement of education status
from Islamic State Institute (IAIN) Sultan Syarif Qasim Pekanbaru which
officially was confirmed based on President Regulations of RI Number 2 in 2005
dated January 4, 2005 about the change of IAIN Sulthan Syarif Kasim Pekanbaru
becomes UIN Sultan Syarif Kasim Riau and opened at 9 Februari 2005 by President
of RI, Bapak Dr. H. Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as evolution follow-up of this
status, The Minister of Religious affairs RI specifies Organisasi and
Administration UIN SUSKA RIAU based on Regulation of Islamic Laws Minister
Nomber 8 in 2005 at the date of 4 April 2005.
As one of higher education in Indonesia, UIN Suska Riau also constitutes a formal institution that has the authority to conduct and develop higher education, teaching, research activities, and public services. These tasks have to be substantially accomplished to produce the desired results, which are highly-qualified human resources and competitive research. The outcomes have to benefit both the development and welfare of the nation. Each higher education institution has its own experts and research staff, research and educational infrastructures, and facilities as well as great financial supports. All of these assets should be well organized and targeted towards the achievement of common objectives, and of national development.
The objectives of higher education and learning of
UIN Suska are also expected to produce qualified experts and professionals who
are capable of participating in local, regional and even international
developments, and to train and prepare other potential people to become new
experts and professionals. The research activities are directed toward
producing information on scientific achievements, development concepts, and
studies on science, technology, and arts. This should not be for the sake of
science, technology, and arts only, but should also be for the benefits of regional
development and the welfare of the people. Community services are directed
toward the urgent needs of the community such as implementation of appropriate
technology and other applicable activities which have been proposed by the
community concerned or surveyed by investigators. Through these tasks, higher
education has been and is still playing a substantial role in national development
by securing human welfare and national stability of our nation.
In line with the efforts of UIN Suska Riau to be a
World Class University with Islamic Integrity concepts, a higher education like UIN Suska
Riau should constitute the best and most accurate model of the system. More
importantly, its primary function is to produce and provide advanced scientific
knowledge, as well as ensure methodological training for specialized medium and
high-ranking executives with Islamic concepts. Further, higher education of UIN
Suska Riau should strongly represents the Islamic communities’ aspiration
towards progress and building a better future. Training for excellence and
advanced specialization has always been among the main objectives of higher
education institutions. At the same time, the university has often been an arena
for teaching and research, and an institution for promoting the culture. The
university also strives to provide opportunities to integrate the youth in
society, and aspires to acquire and develop modern science and technology.
Higher education in general and in Islamic university
in the world has witnessed various phenomena, in the current era, characterized
by multidimensional challenges, some of which are :
- An intensively growing number of students, especially students in Islamic university;
- Diversity in structures, programs and training to meet the requirements of the labor market and to keep abreast of international scientific development;
- Creation and growth of private universities and institutions of higher education due to the encouragement of public authorities to this sector, and because of the pressing need to launch new training programs;
The fast-occurring developments in
the global Islamic university are manifested in the transition to a period of
openness, production and the acquisition of advanced knowledge. This ambition
seems to constitute a challenging and complicated project, since more importance
is currently given to what is called “qualitative education and training” or
“quality training”. This awareness requires sensitizing decision-makers about
the necessity of combining the qualifications, skills and needs of the Islamic
world on the one hand, and the global development of the university as a
universal institution targeting scientific comprehensiveness, on the other. The
world today is also characterized by the impact of globalization. Within these
conditions, most intellectuals, university academics and decision-makers in the
Islamic universities are aware of the crucial importance of working out a
strategy anticipating the prospects of higher education in the Islamic world,
with a view to developing its structures and revitalizing its mission.
The
adoption of a strategy in higher education aims to make this sector contribute
effectively to the development of the new requirements of scientific and technological
progress, and to overcome the obstacles that hinder the targeted economic and social
reforms. It also aims at making this sector closely related to its original
heritage as well as its spiritual and cultural originality.
The
above motives are supported by the beliefs that any effective educational
activity should be based on a goal-oriented vision, well-defined objectives and
clear plans, beside that education in Islam is a channel of a religious and
development message, in line with the teachings of Allah Almighty: “I have
only created jinns and humans so that they may serve Me” (Al-Dariyat:56).
With
various potensial resources like financial supports, infrastructures and human
resources, UIN Suska Riau should optimize the said resources by arranging
future planning and executing productive implementations of activities to be a
world class university in 2020. The year of 2020 is not a long period to gain
its great target, so UIN Suska Riau should be more aggressive and serious to
implement all its programs. Here, I myself just try to express opinions and
ideas that are useful for all of us.
UIN SUSKA RIAU MOTTO
As we know higher education development goals in the Islamic world
university are based on its status quo and the challenges facing it now and in
the future, at the national, regional and international levels. They are also
